Titian was Tiziano Vecellio, an Italian Renaissance painter born in Pieve di Cadore near Belluno, and the most important artist of Renaissance Venetian painting. Along with Giorgione he is considered a founder of the Venetian school. In 1590 Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo called him "the sun amidst small stars not only among the Italians but all the painters of the world".
Titian died on the 27th of August 1576 in Venice while the plague raged in the city. His birth date is uncertain, but most modern scholars believe he was born between 1488 and 1490, meaning he was at least eighty-six and no more than ninety when he died.
In 1516 Titian completed the Assumption of the Virgin for the high altar of the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, where it still hangs. It is his largest single panel, and its colourism on a grand scale rarely before seen in Italy created a sensation.
Titian was sought after first by Venice, then by north Italian princes, and finally by the Habsburgs and the papacy. He became court painter to Emperor Charles V in 1533, and commissions from Charles and his son Philip II monopolized his output from the 1550s.
The poesie were a series of large mythological paintings Titian made for Philip II, inspired mostly by Ovid, and which scholars regard as among his greatest works. They include Danaë, Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Europa, and The Death of Actaeon.
Titian hair has described red hair, almost always on women, since the 19th century, because Titian was a famous artist who liked to paint red-haired women. Anne Shirley in Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables is described as having Titian hair.
