The Sporting News was founded on the 17th of March, 1886, in St. Louis by Alfred H. Spink, who was also a director of the St. Louis Browns baseball team. The weekly newspaper sold for five cents and initially covered baseball, horse racing, and professional wrestling.
The Sporting News earned the nickname "The Bible of Baseball" by becoming the dominant American publication covering the sport. By World War I it had outlasted rival sporting weeklies and stood as the only national newspaper devoted entirely to baseball.
