Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer were born identical twins on the 15th of February 1984 and raised in Durham, North Carolina. They began making films in the third grade using a Hi8 video camera gifted by their parents Ann Marie Christensen and Allen Pace Duffer Jr.
The Duffer Brothers graduated from Chapman University in Orange, California in 2007 after refusing to attend Florida State University due to its requirement for separate education. They maintained a shared vision that would eventually revolutionize the horror genre upon their graduation.
The Duffer Brothers released the first season of Stranger Things on the 15th of July 2016 on Netflix. The series was set in 1980s Indiana and served as a dense homage to the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Sam Raimi, David Lynch, Stephen King, and George Lucas.
Following the premiere of the fourth season of Stranger Things in July 2022, the Duffer Brothers launched their own production company called Upside Down Pictures. This company allowed them to recommitted to Netflix with several new projects including a live-action series adaptation of the manga Death Note and a series adaptation of The Talisman.
The Duffer Brothers announced a four-year deal at Paramount in August 2025 and departed from their long-time partnership at Netflix in April 2026. This move allowed them to produce and direct theatrical feature films for Paramount, an opportunity they had been unable to pursue while signed with Netflix.
