The series debuted on ABC on the 25th of September 1965. New episodes aired until the 21st of October 1967, after which reruns continued until the 7th of September 1969.
Paul Frees, an American actor, voiced John Lennon, George Harrison, and Brian Epstein, and also provided additional voices. Lance Percival voiced Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, while Julie Bennett and Carol Corbett provided the female voices.
Most episodes were produced by Artransa Park Film Studios in Sydney, New South Wales, and by George Dunning's TVC Animation in London. Some episodes were also made in Hollywood, under the supervision of cartoon writer John W. Dunn. From the second season onward, all animation was produced solely at TVC.
The band dismissed the series at first because of its poor quality. Their connection to the show was limited to their music recordings, with no involvement in writing, production, or voice acting.
The band's poor view of the cartoon discouraged their participation in Yellow Submarine. Only after seeing the finished footage, which impressed them, did they agree to appear in a short live-action epilogue. That film shared producer Al Brodax and director George Dunning with the animated series.
The series was syndicated worldwide after its original American run concluded. MTV rebroadcast it in 1986 and 1987, and The Disney Channel began airing it in 1989. Apple Corps Ltd. purchased the rights to the series in the early 1990s, and popular demand for a remastered release has continued since.
