Tech N9ne is the stage name of Aaron Dontez Yates, an American rapper, songwriter, and singer born on the 8th of November 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri. He is known for his chopper-style fast rhyming technique and has sold over two million albums.
The stage name was originally given to Yates by rapper Black Walt as a reference to the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun, recognizing his fast-rhyming chopper delivery. Yates later applied a deeper meaning: "tech" stands for technique and "nine" represents the number of completion.
In 1999, Yates and business partner Travis O'Guin founded Strange Music. The independent label grew out of Yates' disputes with major and mid-tier labels and became the home base for his entire catalog and numerous other artists.
Eminem appeared on Tech N9ne's 2015 track "Speedom (Worldwide Choppers 2)," released as a single on the 20th of April 2015. Eminem contributed free of charge in exchange for Tech N9ne appearing on a future project, an arrangement that Yates said left him "flabbergasted."
