On the 18th of October 1812, Russian forces under Graf von Bennigsen launched a surprise attack on French troops commanded by Joachim Murat near Tarutino. Cossack cavalry under Count Orlov-Denisov drove the French to retreat with heavy casualties, while Russian losses were light. The battle boosted Russian morale after the French occupation of Moscow and marked the start of the counteroffensive that drove Napoleon out of Russia.
The Tarutino monument was inaugurated on the 25th of June 1834, fulfilling a condition written into the 1829 will of Count Sergey Petrovich Rumyantsev. Rumyantsev stipulated that 745 serfs on his estate would be freed from serfdom only after the monument to the 1812 battle was built.
In 1932, the People's Commissariat for Education considered removing the Tarutino monument but could find almost no information on its significance. The monument's only mention in official records was a brief entry in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, so the removal was dropped for lack of documentation.
The mass grave at Tarutino holds 639 soldiers from the 17th and 53rd Rifle Divisions of the Red Army, who fell between October and December 1941. A memorial board at the site lists all 639 soldiers, and a T-34 tank is mounted on a plinth behind the graves.
Archpriest Tikhon was released from prison in 1947 to serve as rector of Saint Nicholas Church in Tarutino, but no housing was provided for him. He lived in the old brick chapel beside the church from 1947 to 1993 and refused to leave the village during Khrushchev's anti-religious campaigns, declining an offer of a city apartment, which kept the church open.
In 2025, Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova announced plans for Tarutino that include a new museum building, historical trails through the battlefield, and a hotel. The battle monument is already listed on the Russian cultural heritage register and was depicted on a five-ruble coin issued by the Central Bank of Russia in 2012.
