Steven Spielberg was born on the 18th of December 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where his family moved in early 1957, and later attended Saratoga High School in California after his family relocated there.
Spielberg made his professional directing debut with "Eyes," a segment of the television series Night Gallery in 1969, scripted by Rod Serling and starring Joan Crawford. His first theatrical film was Duel (1971), a television film that received an international theatrical release due to its positive reviews.
Spielberg has received three Academy Awards. He won Best Director for Schindler's List (1993) and again for Saving Private Ryan (1998). His films have won numerous additional Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture for Schindler's List.
Spielberg established the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation in 1994 after meeting Holocaust survivors during the filming of Schindler's List. The goal was to record survivor testimonies before it was too late; over 50,000 survivors were recorded. In 2006, the foundation transferred its archives to the University of Southern California, where it became the Visual History Archive.
Spielberg co-founded DreamWorks Pictures in 1994 with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. DreamWorks' investors included Microsoft founders Paul Allen and Bill Gates. Spielberg and his partners sold DreamWorks to Viacom in December 2005.
The Fabelmans (2022) is a fictionalized account of Spielberg's own adolescence, which he wrote with Tony Kushner. Gabriel LaBelle plays Sammy Fabelman, a character based on Spielberg. The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People's Choice Award, and received seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.
