The Marvel Star Wars comic series launched on the 14th of January 2015. It was originally written by Jason Aaron with art by John Cassaday, set between the 1977 film Star Wars and its 1980 sequel, The Empire Strikes Back.
It was the first Star Wars comic Marvel had published since its original 1977 adaptation and its 1980-81 adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back. Dark Horse Comics had held the rights from 1991 until 2014, before Disney's acquisitions of Marvel Entertainment and then Lucasfilm brought the license back to Marvel in 2015.
Kieron Gillen replaced Jason Aaron as writer in 2017, while Salvador Larroca took over the art. Marvel announced in 2019 that the series would conclude after 75 issues.
The 2020 relaunch began with a new issue #1 on the 1st of January 2020, written by Charles Soule with art by Jesus Saiz. It continues the story after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, following Leia's Rebellion and Luke's search for a new lightsaber, including a battle with the spirit of the Grand Inquisitor.
The War of the Bounty Hunters crossover follows the Rebels trying to rescue a frozen Han Solo from Crimson Dawn, led by Qi'ra. Boba Fett recovers Han regardless and delivers him to Jabba the Hutt.
The series centers on Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2, alongside Darth Vader. Recurring characters introduced along the way include Sana Starros and, in the 2020 relaunch, Lando Calrissian and Lobot.
