Annie Clark was born on the 28th of September 1982 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and grew up in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas after moving there at the age of seven. Her childhood involved navigating blended families and a mix of Catholic and Unitarian Universalist faiths while finding her voice in a red plastic guitar given to her by her mother at age five.
St. Vincent released her debut album Marry Me on the 10th of July 2007, followed by Actor on the 5th of May 2009, Strange Mercy in 2011, and her self-titled album on the 18th of February 2014. The name St. Vincent is a dual homage to a line in a Nick Cave song about the hospital where Dylan Thomas died and a nod to her great-grandmother's middle name. Her signature Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent guitar was designed in March 2016 and features a signature Vincent Blue finish that Clark personally hand-mixed.
St. Vincent collaborated with David Byrne on the album Love This Giant and worked with Jack Antonoff to produce Masseduction. Her musical influences include David Bowie, Kate Bush, Jimi Hendrix, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, while her songwriting draws inspiration from author Lorrie Moore.
