His habit of using a spoon earned him the nickname Spoonie Gee while he was still very young. His mother passed away when Gabriel turned twelve years old.
The resulting track appeared on Peter Brown's Sound of New York USA imprint around 1979. Peter Brown visited Bobby Robinson's record store looking to make a rap record and suggested Gabriel Jackson's name for the project.
The Godfather of Rap arrived on the Tuff City label that same year in 1987. Marley Marl and Teddy Riley handled production duties for the project.
