The Southeast Division began its existence at the start of the 2004, 05 season. This moment marked a shift in league structure when the NBA expanded from 29 to 30 teams.
Five franchises became the inaugural members of this new grouping including the Atlanta Hawks who arrived from the Central Division and three other teams that moved over from the Atlantic Division. These were the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic and the Washington Wizards.
A significant identity shift occurred effective with the 2014, 15 season when the Charlotte Bobcats changed their name to the Hornets. This rebranding allowed them to assume the history of the original Hornets from 1988 to 2002.
The Heat have won the most Southeast Division titles with twelve victories. Their dominance reached a peak between 2011 and 2014 when they won four consecutive seasons which remains a record to this day in divisional history.
Beginning with the 2021, 22 season the Southeast Division champion receives the Earl Lloyd Trophy. This award honors Hall of Famer Earl Lloyd who debuted for the Washington Capitols on the 31st of October 1950.
