Snitterfield is a village and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon district of Warwickshire, England. It lies less than a mile north of the A46, 4.5 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, 6.5 miles from Warwick, and 17 miles from Coventry.
The population of the Snitterfield civil parish was 1,226 at the 2011 census.
Snitterfield is where John Shakespeare, William Shakespeare's father, lived before moving to Stratford after marrying Mary Arden. William's grandfather, Richard Shakespeare, is recorded in the village's manorial records in 1535 and 1560.
John Grant lived at Norbrook in Snitterfield and was recruited into the Gunpowder Plot in March 1605. He stored gunpowder and weapons at Norbrook, was blinded when gunpowder ignited at Holbeche House, and was executed outside St Paul's Cathedral on Thursday the 30th of January.
Richard Jago was a poet who served as rector of Snitterfield from 1754 until his death in 1781. He is best known for his long topographical poem Edge Hill, published in 1767.
Snitterfield's early name was Snytenfeld, meaning an open field where snipe gathered, combining feld, meaning a cleared stretch of land, with snyten, referring to the birds near the Sherbourne Brook.
