Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a 2009 survival horror game developed by Climax Studios and published by Konami. It was released for the Wii in North America on the 8th of December 2009, with PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable versions following in January 2010.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has no combat. Harry Mason is weaponless for the entire game and can only run, hide, knock down objects to block monsters, and use flares to temporarily ward them off. The developers removed weapons to create the feel of a horror film where the protagonist is a regular person.
Every action the player takes, including responses to Dr. Kaufmann's questionnaires and objects examined during gameplay, contributes a small personality score. These scores build a psychometric profile that changes character appearances, available areas, monster behavior, and dialogue. Writer Sam Barlow described it as mapping the player's actions onto classical psychometric research.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has five endings. Four are variations of a video clip from Cheryl's camcorder reflecting the player's constructed portrait of Harry Mason, including endings named Love Lost, Drunk Dad, Sleaze and Sirens, and Wicked and Weak. A fifth is a joke UFO ending.
Akira Yamaoka composed the soundtrack of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. It was his final contribution to the Silent Hill series before he resigned from Konami after 16 years with the company. The soundtrack won an award for audio design at the Milthon European Games Awards in Paris.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories sold an estimated 440,000 copies across all platforms and only broke even with the help of the PlayStation 2 port. In March 2010, it placed fifth on the top forty bestselling PS2 games in the United Kingdom and eleventh on the Wii list.
