Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo began work on the first game in September 1996. A group of staff members within that studio formed what would become known as Team Silent to create a title that could succeed in the United States market while maintaining artistic integrity.
Director Keiichiro Toyama crafted the scenario for this first entry which launched players into a foggy town in Maine. The team decided to ignore Konami's initial profit-oriented plan and instead focus on emotional engagement using real-time 3D environments but relying heavily on fog and darkness to hide hardware limitations.
The fictional town of Silent Hill sits within the U.S. state of Maine under constant supernatural siege. Fog rolls thick across streets obscuring visibility while darkness swallows alleys and buildings and physical laws governing reality often break down inside the Otherworld manifestation.
A religious organization known as The Order operates within Silent Hill conducting illegal rituals. Members engage in ritual human sacrifices intended to resurrect a chief deity named Samael or simply God and they run an orphanage called the Wish House under the guise of the Silent Hill Smile Support Society.
Bloober Team developed a remake of Silent Hill 2 releasing in October 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC platforms. Akira Yamaoka returned to compose the score ensuring continuity with original musical themes and a second remake of the first game was announced in June 2025 following the success of the previous project.
Three film adaptations have been produced including Silent Hill released in 2006 directed by Christophe Gans. Revelation followed in 2012 written and directed by M.J. Bassett based on the third game and Return to Silent Hill rebooted the series in January 2026 co-written and directed by Gans again.
