Shravana Kumara is a character in the ancient Hindu text the Ramayana, best known for his filial piety toward his blind and aging parents, Shantanu and Jnanavanti. He was accidentally killed by King Dasharatha while drawing water from a lake for his parents during a pilgrimage.
Shravana Kumara placed each parent in a basket, tied the baskets to either end of a bamboo pole, and carried the pole across his shoulders. He transported them this way to the four most sacred places of Hindu pilgrimage because the family could not afford other transport.
King Dasharatha was hunting in the forest of Ayodhya and fired an arrow toward a sound near a lake, expecting to hit an animal. The arrow fatally struck Shravana, who had come to collect water for his blind parents. Dasharatha did not see his target before shooting.
Shravana's parents cursed Dasharatha with Putrashoka, a Sanskrit term meaning grief due to the loss of a son. The curse was fulfilled when Dasharatha died separated from his eldest and most beloved son, Rama, who had been exiled at Dasharatha's own orders.
Local tradition in Uttar Pradesh places Shravana's death at a site now called Sarvan in Unnao district, though another tradition locates the events near Darvan Lake in Ambedkar Nagar district, approximately 80 kilometers from Ayodhya. A samadhi dedicated to Shravana exists in Mukhed in Nanded district of Maharashtra, and a site called Shravan Dhaam near Darvan Lake is being developed to commemorate the legend.
Shravana's parents cursed Dasharatha to experience the same grief they felt at losing their son. The curse materialized when Dasharatha died without seeing Rama, his most beloved son, who had been exiled due to the demands of his stepmother, queen Kaikeyi.
