The album Shepherd Moons was released on the 4th of November 1991. This date marked the release of her third studio record following Watermark.
Enya recorded much of the album at Aigle Studio in Artane, a northern suburb of Dublin. Production teams later relocated to SARM West Studios in London to finish mixing and mastering due to equipment limitations.
An estimated 13 million copies have sold globally since the release of Shepherd Moons. By July 1994 seven million copies had already sold worldwide across all formats.
Enya drew inspiration for Book of Days from her own personal diary entries. Roma Ryan also suggested writing lyrics based on themes from the film Far and Away.
In 1993 Enya won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album for this record. That victory marked her first of four career wins in that category.
