The team played its first match on the 23rd of December 1994, a 2-0 friendly defeat to Brazil in Porto Alegre. This was the first squad composed exclusively of Serbian and Montenegrin players, managed by Slobodan Santrač.
FIFA imposed sanctions on FR Yugoslavia because of the Yugoslav Wars. The ban prevented the team from competing in the 1994 World Cup qualification and the UEFA Euro 1996 qualifying process.
Savo Milošević scored the team's first ever goal on the 31st of March 1995, in a 1-0 win over Uruguay at Stadion Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade. That match was also the team's first official win and first home game.
Serbia and Montenegro finished first in a qualifying group that included Spain, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania and San Marino, going undefeated with a 6-4-0 record. Their defence, known as the Famous Four, conceded just one goal across ten qualifying matches, the best defensive record of all 51 teams in the competition.
Montenegro declared independence on the 3rd of June 2006, after the team had already qualified. It was decided that the existing squad would complete the tournament, representing a state that no longer existed. The split into separate national teams took effect once the team was eliminated.
The team's worst ever international result was a 6-0 loss to Argentina in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. Serbia and Montenegro lost all three group matches and finished with no points.
