Sepp Maier is a German former professional footballer, born Josef Dieter Maier on the 28th of February 1944, who played as goalkeeper for Bayern Munich and the West Germany national team. He is regarded as one of the sport's greatest goalkeepers.
Maier played 709 matches for Bayern Munich across seventeen seasons, making him the club's all-time record appearance holder until Thomas Müller surpassed the mark in 2024.
Maier was nicknamed "Die Katze von Anzing," the cat from Anzing, for his fast reflexes, agility, flexibility, speed, and consistency in goal.
On the 14th of July 1979, Maier crashed his car while aquaplaning and collided with an oncoming vehicle. Doctors later found a ruptured lung, a displaced liver, a torn diaphragm, and two and a half liters of blood in his abdominal cavity, and emergency surgery at Großhadern hospital saved his life. He returned to training on the 26th of November 1979 but had to end his career, missing the entire 1979-80 season.
Maier was part of the West Germany squad at four consecutive World Cups, in 1966, 1970, 1974, and 1978, winning the title on home soil in 1974 when West Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the final.
After retiring, Maier coached for both Bayern Munich and the West Germany national team and mentored goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. His national team contract was terminated in October 2004 by manager Jürgen Klinsmann after Maier publicly backed Kahn over Arsenal's Jens Lehmann.
