A group of thirty-five San Antonio businessmen led by Angelo Drossos, John Schaefer, and Red McCombs negotiated a lease agreement to take over the franchise. They initially renamed the team the San Antonio Gunslingers but changed it to the Spurs before playing their first game under that banner.
