Sailor Moon first aired in Japan on the 7th of March 1992, on TV Asahi, taking over the timeslot previously held by Goldfish Warning!. The series ran for 200 episodes and concluded on the 8th of February 1997.
The Sailor Moon manga was written by Naoko Takeuchi and published in the magazine Nakayoshi from 1992 to 1997. Takeuchi initially planned for only one season of both the manga and anime before the franchise's popularity extended the run to five seasons.
The Sailor Moon media franchise reached $1.5 billion in merchandise sales during the first three years. The broader merchandising campaign spanned more than 5,000 items.
DIC Productions mandated cuts to content and length that reduced the first 89 episodes by seven. The censorship removed brief nudity, bathing scenes, violence against children, and same-sex romantic relationships. Characters including Zoisite and Fisheye were changed from male to female, and Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus's romantic relationship was reframed as a cousin relationship.
After cancellation, a fan petition gathered over 12,500 signatures and caught the attention of General Mills, which in 1997 agreed to sponsor and syndicate the dub through The Program Exchange. Re-runs began on USA Network on the 9th of June 1997, and the series moved to Cartoon Network's Toonami block on the 1st of June 1998.
Takanori Arisawa composed the score. Columbia Records awarded him the Golden Disk Grand Prize for the first series soundtrack in 1993. Arisawa also won three consecutive JASRAC International Awards for most international royalties in 1998, 2000, and 2001. The opening theme Moonlight Densetsu won first place in the Animage Anime Grand Prix Song category in both its 15th and 16th editions.
