Rusty Schweickart served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 9 in March 1969, the first crewed test of the lunar module. He performed the first extravehicular activity of the Apollo program, testing the portable life support system later used by the twelve astronauts who walked on the Moon. He spent just over 241 hours in space during the mission.
Schweickart suffered from space adaptation syndrome during Apollo 9, which prompted concerns about putting him back on a lunar mission. He also chose not to request a new flight assignment until NASA understood more about motion sickness, spending six months as a test subject. By the time that period ended, the relevant crew slots had already been filled.
The B612 Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending Earth from asteroid impacts, co-founded by Schweickart in 2002 along with former astronaut Ed Lu and two planetary scientists. Schweickart served as its chair and later chair emeritus. He testified before the U.S. Congress in May 2005 on the specific dangers posed by asteroid 99942 Apophis.
Assigned as backup commander for Skylab 2, Schweickart developed the hardware and procedures used by the crew to repair the station after it lost its thermal shield during launch and had a jammed solar array wing. His work enabled the crew to erect an emergency solar shade and deploy the solar array, saving the station. He received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1973 for this contribution.
Schweickart received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1969 and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale De la Vaulx Medal in 1970 for Apollo 9. He also received a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Special Trustees Award (Emmy Award) in 1969 for transmitting the first live TV pictures from space, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1973 for his Skylab work. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1997.
Schweickart served as California Governor Jerry Brown's assistant for science and technology for two years, then as a member and chairman of the California Energy Commission for five and a half years. He later worked in satellite communications, founding Courier Satellite Services and serving as CEO of ALOHA Networks, and co-founded the Association of Space Explorers in 1984-85 and the B612 Foundation in 2002.
