Rogue One omitted the traditional Star Wars opening crawl because Gareth Edwards and producer Kathleen Kennedy wanted the anthology films to feel distinct from the main saga. Kennedy confirmed in November 2016 that the film would begin in a way that is traditional, with just the title.
Industrial Light & Magic used CGI to superimpose a digitally recreated likeness of Peter Cushing over actor Guy Henry to portray Grand Moff Tarkin, with permission from Cushing's estate. A similar technique placed Carrie Fisher's likeness from the original film over actress Ingvild Deila to portray a young Princess Leia.
