Seth Green directed the episode after receiving permission from George Lucas to produce a thirty-minute parody. The writing staff spent three weeks developing material that was twice the length of a standard show.
The special won the Annie Award for Best Directing in an Animated Television Production and received a nomination for Best Animated Television Production at the same ceremony. The episode lost the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program to The Simpsons in 2008.
Two sequels followed the original broadcast date with Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II airing on the 16th of November 2008. The third installment arrived later on the 19th of December 2010.
