Riverside was formally incorporated in 1951. The incorporation was led by Edward Young, who had founded the Red X store in 1948, along with local business owners Ferd Filger and Dr. Thomas M. Eagle, after both Parkville and Kansas City expressed interest in annexing the area.
The Riverside Park Jockey Club operated from 1928 to 1937 and was nicknamed the Pendergast Track after Tom Pendergast, the city boss of Kansas City and the club's patron. Pendergast's name did not appear on the club's official organization papers despite his association with the track.
Riverside had a population of 4,013 at the 2020 census. The median age was 35.0 years, and 25.9% of residents were under the age of 18.
