Rick and Morty was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Adult Swim. The show grew out of The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, an animated short Roiland made in 2006 for Channel 101, which parodied characters from the Back to the Future film trilogy.
The first season of Rick and Morty premiered in December 2013 on Adult Swim, airing Mondays at 10:30 pm ET/PT. The pilot had been picked up to series in October 2012 after Adult Swim unveiled the project in May 2012.
In January 2023, Adult Swim cut ties with Roiland after it was reported he faced felony domestic battery and false imprisonment charges in Orange County, California, stemming from an alleged incident in January 2020. The Orange County District Attorney's office dropped all charges in March 2023 due to insufficient evidence, but Adult Swim had already recast his roles.
Ian Cardoni took over as the voice of Rick and Harry Belden became the new voice of Morty, beginning with the seventh season that premiered on the 15th of October 2023.
Rick and Morty has won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program twice, in 2018 and in 2020. The series has also received two Annie Awards and holds a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In May 2018, Adult Swim announced a long-term deal ordering 70 new episodes. At New York Comic Con in 2024, it was announced the series had been renewed through a twelfth season. Season 9 began airing on the 24th of May 2026.
