Pylos is known as the site of the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor, excavated near the modern town from 1939 onward, and as the location of the Battle of Navarino, fought on the 20th of October 1827, when an allied fleet destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian navy. It is also the main harbor on Navarino Bay in Messenia, Peloponnese.

Archaeologists Carl Blegen and Konstantinos Kourouniotis discovered the Palace of Nestor in 1939, uncovering a throne room, storage warehouses and frescoes, along with 1,087 fragments of Linear B clay tablets, the largest such cache found in Greece. In 2015, a separate team led by Sharon Stocker and Jack L. Davis found the nearby tomb of the Griffin Warrior, furnished with armor, weapons and gold jewelry.
On the 20th of October 1827, a combined British, French and Russian fleet of 27 warships destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet at Navarino, sinking or wrecking around 60 warships. The battle followed the Treaty of London of July 1827 and helped confirm Greek independence.
After the Frankish conquest of the early 13th century, the Greek name Avarinos, later Navarino, gradually replaced the French name Port-de-Jonc and became dominant in the 15th century. The name Pylos itself was not revived until 1833, when King Otto I restored it by royal decree.
On the night of the 14th of June 2023, a vessel carrying an estimated 400-750 migrants and refugees capsized off the coast of Pylos, allegedly after the Greek coastguard tried to pull it into the Italian maritime search and rescue zone. More than 500 people were presumed dead.
