Prince Rogers Nelson was born on the 7th of June 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in a household where music was treated as a religion and his parents were devout members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In 1984, Prince became the first singer to simultaneously hold the number one spot on the charts for a film, an album, and a single. The film Purple Rain, the soundtrack album, and the song When Doves Cry dominated the American landscape and spent six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart.
Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in 1993 as a direct rebellion against the music industry's control over artists during a bitter contractual dispute with Warner Bros. Records. He viewed the corporate entities as enslaving creative talent and refused to be called by any other name for several years.
Prince died on the 21st of April 2016 at the age of 57 after accidentally overdosing on counterfeit hydrocodone and paracetamol pills laced with fentanyl. The incident occurred at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
