Philosophy Now was founded in May 1991 by Rick Lewis, making it the first general philosophy magazine. It launched as a quarterly publication based in Ipswich, England, before increasing to a bimonthly schedule in 2000.
Rick Lewis is editor in chief. Grant Bartley edits the print edition and Bora Dogan edits the digital editions. The magazine operates with two editorial boards, one in the United Kingdom and one in the United States.
In the August/September 2004 issue of Philosophy Now, philosopher Antony Flew published a letter indicating that his long-held atheist position on God's existence had changed. The news was picked up by newspapers around the world, most of which cited the Philosophy Now letter as the source.
The Philosophy Now Award for Contributions in the Fight Against Stupidity is an annual award launched in 2011. Past winners include Mary Midgley (2011), Noam Chomsky (2014), Cressida Cowell (2015), and Jon Ronson (2020). The award ceremony is held each year at Conway Hall in London.
The Philosophy Now Festival was held at Conway Hall in Bloomsbury, central London. It ran every two years from 2011 to 2020, with festivals in 2011, 2013-2015, January 2018, and 2020. Each was a one-day event open to the general public.
Philosophy Now won the Bertrand Russell Society Award for 2016.
