Creators Mike Lazzo and Matt Maiellaro established the core character designs for Perfect Hair Forever. Rod appears early in the series as an entity made of fire who calls himself the god of anime.
Members of the creative team stated they were not interested in continuing the show to a second season after the first six episodes. Cancellation was formally announced at the Adult Swim panel during Comic-Con 2006.
An eighth episode was produced and aired unannounced on the 1st of April 2014 as part of Adult Swim's 2014 April Fools' Stunt. Two versions existed: Muscular Distraction - A and Muscular Distraction - B, which aired at 12:00 AM and 12:15 AM respectively.
The entire series has been made available for free streaming on the Adult Swim website over time. International broadcast saw the show air previously on Teletoon's Teletoon at Night block in Canada.
