Paul Gauguin was born on the 7th of June 1848 and spent his early childhood in Peru. He was 18 months old when his family settled there, enjoying a privileged upbringing attended by nursemaids and servants before returning to France.
Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh spent nine weeks painting together at the Yellow House in Arles in 1888 before their relationship deteriorated. On the evening of the 23rd of December 1888, Vincent van Gogh cut off his own left ear and Gauguin left Arles, never seeing him again.
Paul Gauguin set sail for Tahiti on the 1st of April 1891 with the intent to escape European civilization and find a primitive, uncorrupted existence. He established his studio in Mataiea, Papeari, to create paintings depicting Tahitian life and culture.
Paul Gauguin died suddenly on the morning of the 8th of May 1903 in Atuona on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. He was buried in the Catholic Calvary Cemetery in Atuona at 2 p.m. the following day.
Paul Gauguin suffered from heart palpitations, leg pain, and general debility which local doctors diagnosed as heart problems or early signs of cardiovascular syphilis. He treated his pain with morphine injections and laudanum before his death in 1903.
