Olsberg is first mentioned in written records in 1236, under the name Olsperg. The village grew from the courtyard of a Cistercian convent, which held local justice rights and land ownership until 1790.

From 1330 to 1797 the right bank of the Violenbach belonged to the Austrian district of Rheinfelden, while the left bank belonged to the city of Basel from 1461. After 1797 the right-bank portion became a French protectorate before joining the Canton of Aargau in 1803; the left bank eventually became part of Canton Basel-Country and today forms part of the municipality of Arisdorf.
