The Old Cantonal School Aarau, known in German as the Alte Kantonsschule Aarau or Alte Kanti, is the oldest non-church secondary school in Switzerland. Founded in 1802, it operates as a public school in Aarau and has long been regarded as one of the best educational institutions in the country.
The school was founded in 1802 by Johann Samuel von Gruner, the factory owner Johann Rudolf Meyer, and the writer Andreas Moser. Moser also created Switzerland's first gymnasium at the same site. The founders were strongly influenced by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, and the first director was Georg Franz Hofmann, then serving as secretary of the Helvetic government.
The Einstein House is named after Albert Einstein, who was once a pupil at the school. The building was inaugurated around 1896, and in 1917 an extension was completed that added an observatory to the campus.
Students are required to study German, English, and French. They can also choose from Latin, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic (available since 2006), Japanese, and Chinese (both offered since 2014). The school provides certifications including the Latinum, Graecum, Hebraicum, Cambridge Advanced, and Cambridge Proficiency examinations.
Keyboard writing has been compulsory at the school since 2003, and the school became an authorized ECDL test center in 2005. In 2010, it launched the IMS, a three-year computer science course leading to a commercial vocational baccalaureate and a federal certificate in Computer Science and Application Development. Since 2017, computer science has been compulsory for all high school students.
The Alte Kantonsschule Aarau received the School Prize of the Science Olympiad in 2014, 2020, and 2021. The school has long held a reputation as one of the best educational institutions in Switzerland.
