Obi-Wan Kenobi is a six-episode Star Wars series set ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, living in exile on the planet Tatooine under the name Ben, is drawn out of hiding to rescue a kidnapped young Leia Organa from the Galactic Empire's Inquisitors. The mission forces him into conflict with his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker, now the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Ewan McGregor stars as Obi-Wan Kenobi, reprising the role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen returns as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse reprise their roles as Owen and Beru Lars, and Jimmy Smits returns as Senator Bail Organa. Vivien Lyra Blair debuts as a young Leia Organa, while Moses Ingram, Rupert Friend, and Sung Kang portray the Inquisitors.
Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney+ on the 27th of May 2022, with its first two episodes released together. The remaining four episodes followed weekly through the 22nd of June 2022.
The original project was a standalone feature film that Disney cancelled following the commercial failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. It was then developed as a six-episode limited series for Disney+. A second production pause followed in January 2020 when Lucasfilm was dissatisfied with scripts that too closely mirrored the storyline of The Mandalorian, leading to a full rewrite by incoming showrunner Joby Harold.
Natalie Holt composed the original score, becoming the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project. John Williams wrote a new main theme for the series, recorded with an orchestra in Los Angeles in mid-February 2022. Williams contributed because Obi-Wan Kenobi was the only major character from the original 1977 Star Wars film who had not yet received a dedicated standalone theme from him.
Obi-Wan Kenobi won Best Limited Event Series for Streaming at the 47th Saturn Awards, and Hayden Christensen won Best Guest Starring Role on Television for his performance as Darth Vader at the same ceremony. The series was nominated for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards and won multiple Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2024 for editing, sound mixing, and fantasy costumes.
