Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Ewan McGregor officially announced the series at Disney's D23 event in August 2019. Development began earlier when McGregor entered negotiations to star in a television series for Disney+ by mid-August 2019.
Deborah Chow directed the six-episode limited series after impressing Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy with her work on The Mandalian. She chose Chung-hoon Chung as cinematographer due to his visual style.
The story follows Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi hiding on Tatooine for ten years while watching over Anakin Skywalker's son Luke. He is called on a mission to rescue Anakin's daughter Leia when she is kidnapped by the Galactic Empire's Jedi-hunting Inquisitors.
Ewan McGregor stars as the title character alongside Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Jimmy Smits, Hayden Christensen, and Ian McDiarmid who all returned from previous films. Vivien Lyra Blair debuted as a young Leia Organa while Rupert Friend played the Grand Inquisitor.
Filming began on the 4th of May 2021 in Los Angeles California with Deborah Chow directing. Production wrapped by September 19 with Nicholas De Toth and Kelley Dixon finishing their scenes at Manhattan Beach Studios.
The series consists of six episodes that premiered on Disney+ on the 26th of May 2022 with its first two episodes. The remaining four episodes were released weekly on Wednesdays from June 1 until June 22.
