Nurmijärvi is the most populous municipality in Finland without city status. It is also the birthplace of Aleksis Kivi, Finland's national author, and it was the first place in Finland to detect rising radiation levels from the Chernobyl disaster on the 27th of April 1986.
Nurmijärvi is located 37 kilometres north of Helsinki in the Uusimaa region. It is part of the Helsinki metropolitan area and borders the municipalities of Espoo, Vantaa, Tuusula, Hyvinkää and Vihti.
Aleksis Kivi was Finland's national author, born in Nurmijärvi in 1834 and died in 1872. His most famous work, Seitsemän veljestä (Seven Brothers), published in 1870, is referenced in the municipality's coat of arms. On the 29th of January 2020, Nurmijärvi declared itself the Capital of Aleksis Kivi.
Finland's first pharmaceutical factory was founded by pharmacist Albin Koponen in Nurmijärvi in 1899. It produced filicin from male fern root rhizomes, sold under the names Filisin and Filicon as medicines against tapeworm infections, with capsules exported as far as China and America.
Nurmijärvi is divided into four main areas. Klaukkala in the south is the largest with over 20,000 inhabitants. The administrative centre, also called Nurmijärvi, has almost 8,000 inhabitants. Rajamäki in the north has over 7,000, and Röykkä in the northwest has over 1,500 residents.
Nurmijärvi means "lawn lake" in Finnish. The lake that gave the municipality its name was drained in the early 20th century and is now flat agricultural fields near the village centre.
