The Northwest Division began its operations on the 27th of October 2004. Five teams including the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, and Seattle SuperSonics started their shared history at that time.
The Seattle SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City before the 2008, 09 season and changed their name to the Thunder. They remained within the Northwest Division despite crossing state lines.
