Northern Virginia Technical College opened its doors on the 8th of February 1965 with a single building in Bailey's Crossroads. President Robert L. McKee guided the institution through its first semester which enrolled 761 students.
The college operates across six campuses and four centers including locations in Annandale, Sterling, Manassas, Woodbridge, Alexandria, and Springfield. The initial permanent campus site was established in Annandale during 1966 after outgrowing the original space in Bailey's Crossroads.
The student body includes nearly 75,000 individuals from more than 180 countries who are supported by more than 2,500 faculty and staff members. Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools validates over 160 associate degrees and certificate programs offered today.

Hockey was dropped following the 2019-20 season while the Nighthawks returned to competition for the 2022-23 school year after pausing during the pandemic.
