Alfred Nobel signed the document on the 27th of November 1895 at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris. This act directed 94% of his fortune to establish prizes in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine, and literature.
The Nobel Foundation manages all finances and administration for the organization. It never participates in choosing winners but ensures money remains independent from the selection process through four bodies holding power to select laureates.
The investment capital grew steadily over more than a century to reach 6.6 billion Swedish kroner by the end of 2024. That amount equals approximately 700 million US dollars today.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee formed shortly after the Storting approval on the 26th of April 1897. Other institutions followed suit with Karolinska Institutet joining on the 7th of June and the Swedish Academy on the 9th of June before the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences completed the group on the 11th of June.
King Oscar II promulgated the new statutes in 1900, allowing the first awards to be given on the 10th of December 1901. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen received one of those initial honors.
