His professional path began at the University of Exeter from 1971 until 1972 as a lecturer in economic history. He later held appointments at Leeds and Warwick universities before he moved to the London School of Economics in 1995 and returned to Warwick in 2005.
During the 1980s Nicholas Crafts collaborated with Knick Harley to challenge existing assumptions about British growth rates. Their findings revealed that overall growth was much lower than previous scholars had believed and heavily concentrated in just two specific industries: cotton and iron.
