The NBA Sportsmanship Award is given annually to a player who best exemplifies ethical behavior, fair play, and integrity on the court. It does not require the recipient to be among the league's top performers in statistics or wins.
Mike Conley has won the NBA Sportsmanship Award four times, the most in league history. He claimed the award in 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2023, representing the Memphis Grizzlies three times and the Minnesota Timberwolves once.
The Joe Dumars Trophy, presented to NBA Sportsmanship Award winners since 2000, is named after Joe Dumars, the inaugural recipient of the award. Dumars played as a guard for the Detroit Pistons.
Each of the 30 NBA teams nominates one player, and a panel selects one winner per division. At the end of the regular season, players across the league vote using a weighted points system: eleven points for a first-place vote, nine for second, and so on down to one point for a sixth-place vote. The player with the highest total wins.
The San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies have each had players win the award three times, tying for the most wins by any franchise. Several teams, including the Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers, and Los Angeles Lakers, have never had a winner.
The WNBA equivalent is the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, awarded by the NBA's sister league. Like the NBA award, it does not require the recipient to demonstrate exceptional playing statistics.
