Narayan Dattatraya Apte (1911-1949) was an Indian nationalist and manager of the Hindu Rashtra newspaper who helped plan the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the 30th of January 1948. He stood at Nathuram Godse's side as Godse fired the shots at Birla House. Apte was tried, found guilty, and hanged on the 15th of November 1949.
Apte graduated from Bombay University in 1932 with a Bachelor of Science degree and later earned a Bachelor of Education qualification. He worked as a tutor at Mission High School in Ahmednagar and also served as a Flight Lieutenant and recruiter for the Royal Indian Air Force during the Second World War.
Apte joined the Hindu Mahasabha in 1939 and developed a close working relationship with Godse within the organization. In 1944, the two collaborated on a newspaper called Agranee, later renamed Hindu Rashtra, with Apte serving as its manager. Together they traveled from Pune to Mumbai and then to Delhi in January 1948 to carry out the plot against Gandhi.
Hindu Rashtra was a newspaper promoting the ideals of the Hindu Rashtra Dal and the Hindu Mahasabha, managed by Apte and originally named Agranee when Godse proposed it in 1944. Its content was inflammatory enough to breach the Bombay Press Act, prompting the name change to avoid a government shutdown. The final issue was published on the 31st of January 1948, the day after Gandhi was killed.
Apte was hanged on the 15th of November 1949, alongside Nathuram Godse, following their conviction for Gandhi's murder. He was approximately thirty-eight years old at the time of his execution.
Apte evaded arrest for two weeks after Gandhi was killed on the 30th of January 1948. He was eventually apprehended in Mumbai.
