Michel Krieger is a Brazilian software engineer and entrepreneur, born on the 4th of March, 1986, in São Paulo. He co-founded Instagram in 2010 with Kevin Systrom and served as its chief technology officer until 2018, during which time Instagram's user base grew from a few million to one billion monthly active users.
Krieger majored in symbolic systems at Stanford University, which he attended after moving from Brazil to California in 2004. It was at Stanford that he first crossed paths with Kevin Systrom, his future co-founder at Instagram.
Krieger's resignation from Instagram was announced on the 24th of September, 2018, with the departure to follow in a few weeks. He had served as chief technology officer since Instagram's founding in 2010.
Krieger and Systrom launched Rt.live on the 18th of April, 2020, a tracker of COVID-19 spread rates across US states. They followed that with Artifact, an AI-powered news app launched on the 31st of January, 2023, which was shut down in January 2024.
Krieger announced he was joining Anthropic as chief product officer on the 15th of May, 2024. By January 2026, he had moved onto Anthropic's Labs team.
In April 2015, Krieger committed US$750,000 over two years to GiveWell, with 90 percent directed toward grants through the Open Philanthropy Project. In 2021, he and his wife also helped fund the opening of the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco in the Dogpatch neighborhood.
