Michiyo Yasuda was born in Tokyo's Nakano ward and grew up in the Tokyo metropolitan area. She spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Higashi-fushimi, a neighborhood that later became part of Nishitōkyō city as of 2001.
Michiyo Yasuda joined Toei Doga in April 1958, immediately after her graduation from high school. She started out in the ink and paint section as a tracer, transferring cleaned up line drawings onto cels for TV series and commercials.
Michiyo Yasuda took charge of Studio Ghibli's color department from its inception in June 1985. She collaborated with various directors and animators to create color designs for nearly all Studio Ghibli animation works until her retirement.
Michiyo Yasuda officially retired after working on Ponyo in 2008. She continued to work on The Wind Rises, which was released in July 2013, before passing away in 2016.
