Michael Friedrich Benedikt Baron von Melas entered the world on the 12th of May 1729 in Radeln, Transylvania. This small settlement now bears the name Roadeș within Bunești commune, Brașov County, Romania.
He served as aide de camp for Leopold Josef Graf Daun during these turbulent years. Daun commanded significant forces against Prussia and its allies throughout the conflict while Melas learned the arts of staff work under his direct supervision.
They achieved victories at Cassano, Trebbia, Novi, Genola, and the Siege of Genoa. These successes brought them near another victory over Napoleon before Marengo intervened.
The day after this battle he signed the Convention of Alessandria which gave rule of Italy up to the Mincio River to Napoleon. Habsburg Crown authority was forced out of Italy as a consequence.
His final days were spent in Týnec nad Labem within Bohemia and he died on the 31st of May 1806 at that location. His grave remains in Bohemia today as a marker of his long career.
