Konami announced the first volume of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection in May 2023 during a PlayStation Showcase event.
The collection released on Nintendo Switch, Windows via Steam, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 4 with an upgrade path to PS5. The initial announcement included MSX titles while later updates added digital releases for other systems.
All platforms were locked to 720p despite earlier promises of 1080p resolution. The Nintendo Switch version runs at 30 FPS in Handheld Mode while other consoles target higher frame rates but face similar limitations.
Vol. 1 includes motion comics from 2006 and 2008 along with strategy guides and screenplay books as digital copies. An in-game sound selection features twenty tracks curated from across the entire collection.
Konami removed digital downloads for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in November 2021 due to expired licenses. The company announced intentions to reinstate these games in July 2022 for the series' 35th anniversary.
