Tom Hanks starred in Mazes and Monsters in his first lead acting role, playing Robbie Wheeling, a college student whose sense of reality fractures over the course of a fantasy game. The cast also included Chris Makepeace, Wendy Crewson, and David Wysocki.
Rona Jaffe based her 1981 novel Mazes and Monsters on distorted press coverage of the 1979 disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III from Michigan State University. Reporters had speculated, inaccurately, that his hobby of Dungeons and Dragons played a role in his vanishing. Private investigator William Dear laid out the actual facts in his 1984 book The Dungeon Master.
Steven Hilliard Stern directed Mazes and Monsters. The film was adapted from Rona Jaffe's 1981 novel of the same name.
In 1985, Thomas Radecki of the National Coalition on Television Violence claimed that a letter proved Dungeons and Dragons had caused the deaths of gamers. That letter had been written by a fictional character inside Jaffe's novel, not by a real person.
Robbie ends the film in counseling at his parents' home, permanently convinced he is his game character, the cleric Pardieu. His three friends choose to sustain his delusion by continuing to play the game with him. Kate's final line is: "And so... we played the game again... for one last time."
Plumeria Pictures released Mazes and Monsters on Blu-ray on the 19th of September 2022, marking the film's 40th anniversary. It was the film's first high-definition release.
