Mario Kempes is an Argentine former professional footballer born on the 15th of July 1954 in Bell Ville, Córdoba. He is best known for leading Argentina's attack at the 1978 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot, the Golden Ball, and the South American Footballer of the Year award. He is one of only three players in history to have claimed all three individual honors at a single World Cup, alongside Garrincha in 1962 and Paolo Rossi in 1982.
Kempes scored six goals at the 1978 World Cup, all in three two-goal bursts. He scored twice against Poland and twice against Peru in the second-round group stage, then scored twice in the final against the Netherlands, which Argentina won 3-1. His second goal in the final, in the 105th minute of extra time, was the game winner.
Kempes played for Instituto and Rosario Central in Argentina, where he scored 85 goals in 105 matches, before moving to Valencia in Spain. At Valencia he scored 116 goals in 184 league games and won the Copa del Rey, the European Cup Winners' Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. After retiring, Kempes managed clubs in Albania, Venezuela, and Bolivia. His stint with Albanian club Lushnja was historically notable: he became the first foreign manager in Albanian football to sign a foreign player. He also works as an analyst and commentator for ESPN Deportes and provided Spanish-language commentary for the FIFA video game franchise from FIFA 13 through FIFA 23.
