Lost Moon was written by astronaut Jim Lovell and journalist Jeffrey Kluger. Lovell commanded the Apollo 13 mission; Kluger first approached him about the collaboration in 1991. The book was published by Houghton Mifflin in October 1994.
Lost Moon tells the story of the failed April 1970 Apollo 13 lunar landing mission. An explosion in the Service Module's liquid oxygen tank crippled the spacecraft, forcing the crew to use the Lunar Module Aquarius as a lifeboat for their return to Earth.
The 1995 film Apollo 13, directed by Ron Howard, is based on Lost Moon. Tom Hanks stars as Jim Lovell. The paperback edition of the book was later retitled Apollo 13 to match the film.
An onboard liquid oxygen tank in the Service Module exploded, crippling the electrical power and propulsion systems of the Command Module Odyssey. The crew aborted the lunar landing and used the Lunar Module Aquarius as a lifeboat to return safely to Earth.
Only Jim Lovell co-authored the book. Fred Haise declined to participate, and Jack Swigert, the Command Module pilot, had died of cancer in 1982. Jeffrey Kluger collaborated with Lovell as the journalist co-author.
