Leonel Sánchez was a Chilean professional footballer who played as a striker and left winger from 1953 to 1973. He is best known as the top scorer of the 1962 FIFA World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot and the Bronze Ball, and led Chile to a third-place finish on home soil.
In a first-round 1962 World Cup match between Chile and Italy, Sánchez punched Italian defender Mario David during an altercation after being fouled, and later broke the nose of Humberto Maschio with a left hook. David was sent off for kicking Sánchez in the head, and Chile won the match 2-0. In 2007, The Times ranked Sánchez number 6 on their list of the 50 hardest footballers in history as a result of his role in that game.
Leonel Sánchez scored 24 goals in 85 appearances for Chile, making him the seventh all-time top scorer in the national team's history. He also contributed 13 assists across his international career, which spanned from 1955 to 1968.
Sánchez received numerous offers from prominent European clubs including Real Madrid, Juventus, and AC Milan but chose to remain at Universidad de Chile. He did play on loan for AC Milan in June 1963 for the Torneo Città di Milano, which Milan won, but he returned to Chile rather than signing permanently.
The IFFHS ranked Leonel Sánchez as the 40th Best South American Footballer of the 20th Century. That ranking placed him ahead of compatriot Iván Zamorano, Brazilian players Domingos da Guia and Ademir Marques de Menezes, Uruguayan José Pedro Cea, and Argentine Raimundo Orsi.
Leonel Sánchez won six Chilean League titles with Universidad de Chile, in 1959, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1967, and 1969. He also won the Metropolitan Tournament of Chile in 1968 and 1969, and added a seventh domestic championship when he won the 1970 Chilean League with Colo-Colo.
