The name Leoben first appeared in historical records as Liupina in the year 904. This Slavic root word ljub- translates to beloved, marking a linguistic thread stretching back over a millennium.
Leoben sits within the Mur Valley of central Austria, positioned eight kilometres east of Sankt Michael and fifteen kilometres west of Bruck an der Mur.
