KonoSuba follows Kazuma Satou, who is reincarnated into a fantasy world with MMORPG elements after an embarrassing death. He forms a dysfunctional adventuring party with the goddess Aqua, the magician Megumin, and the crusader Darkness, based in the town of Axel.
Natsume Akatsuki wrote KonoSuba, with illustrations by Kurone Mishima, intending to set the series in contrast with typical fantasy tropes. Akatsuki had long been a fan of novels like Record of Lodoss War before writing it.
The first season of the KonoSuba anime aired on Tokyo MX from the 14th of January to the 16th of March 2016, produced by Studio Deen and directed by Takaomi Kanasaki. A second season followed on the same network from the 12th of January to the 16th of March 2017.
By the 2nd of March 2016, the eleven-volume light novel series had 1.5 million copies in print. That grew to 6.5 million copies by February 2019 and to 10 million copies in circulation by November 2021.
